Waves of Hope Project

Marine pollution is a growing challenge along Mumbai’s coastline. Our CAS project, Waves of Hope, aimed to contribute to cleaner beaches while raising awareness about the environmental impact of waste. Our initiative began with a beach clean-up at Juhu Beach shortly after the Ganpati immersion festivities, when large amounts of waste typically wash ashore. During this visit, our team collected non-biodegradable waste including plastic bottles, bags, and wrappers. By the end of the clean-up, we had filled five large bags of trash. While working, we also observed other organisations conducting similar drives, which allowed us to learn from their coordination methods and improve our own approach for future activities. For our second phase, we focused on collecting seaglass from Carter Road Beach in Bandra. Seaglass fragments not only pollute the shoreline but can also pose risks to animals if ingested. After safely collecting the pieces, we cleaned and sanitized them before repurposing them creatively. Using wire-wrapping techniques, we transformed the seaglass into handmade pendants and necklaces. Although none of us had prior experience with jewellery-making, we experimented with different methods and gradually improved our designs through collaboration and online tutorials. Beyond the physical clean-ups, our team also conducted awareness sessions at school. Through Waves of Hope, we learned the importance of teamwork, adaptability, and environmental responsibility.
