Primary Art Competition 2022-2023
Visual Art is used as an expressive tool and is one of the most unique and limitless forms of communication. Art helps us to express ideas, feelings, thoughts on the way we experience the world around us. Every artist chooses their own colours, lines and shapes that are meaningful and cathartic for them.
Similarly, through self-expression, children communicate their feelings in a positive way. It helps children develop a sense of identity, self-confidence, and a sense of belonging to the world.
The Student Council, who coordinated and conducted the event, put together a challenging list of words, keeping in mind the age of the participants. The final contest consisted of multiple rounds, that urged the learners to pause, ponder and pronounce. They were pushed beyond their commonplace vocabulary, having to deal with some low-frequency words. The participants and the audience were seen at the edge of their seats, engrossed in the proceedings, anticipating answers and watching the house points escalate. The students displayed exceptional skill and mastery while spelling some of the advanced words.
This year the theme for our art competition was ‘Self- Expression’.
Each class was given a different topic based on the theme. The topics were integrated with their current unit under study, based on Lines and Patterns.
The students participated eagerly and were joyfully involved in the process for over two classes. They manipulated various media and techniques as they reflected on their thoughts and emotions to express their artistic ideas, with imagination and creativity.
They applied their self-management skills, worked independently, and made spontaneous choices to complete their artwork.
The classwise topics were:
LKG- Freedom of Expression- The students took inspiration from nature and used various painting techniques to express their feelings. They used materials like crayons and paints.
UKG- Self- Portrait- The students created self-portraits using craft materials, including coloured paper, crayons, crepe paper, wool, fevicol and scissors and different techniques to complete their art pieces.
CLASS 1- My Favourite Thing- The students created artwork based on their object of interest and in the style of artist Britto. Brush pens, and black markers were used.
CLASS 2- Shape of Me- The students drew themselves and completed the background with a pattern or shape of their choice, using crayons and paints.
CLASS 3- Dreams and Nightmares- The students visually represented their moods and emotions through dreams or nightmares, using watercolor techniques.
CLASS 4- Expressive Textures- The students used the impasto technique to create a textured artwork of their choice, inspired by artist Van Gogh, to express their thoughts and feelings. Materials used were texture white, palette knife, paints, and pencil.
CLASS 5- Wall Art/Graffiti- The students displayed the art of Graffiti as a mode of self-expression on a subject of their interest. They added a slogan or text to voice their feelings. They used materials like brush pens, felt pens, crayons, and paints.
